Ladies and Gentlemen we have a name!

We asked big sister Alexis if she would like the honor of naming her little sister. Steve and I had chosen two names that we both loved equally and gave her the choice between the two names. When we spoke with her on Christmas, she told us that she definitely wanted to name her and told us her choice! Actually, in true Alexis form, she sent us a picture of a post it note where she had written down the name :) She told us that the main reason she chose it was because it was a character in a video game that protected and loved the other characters! We could not have a received a better Christmas gift!

By the way, you'll still have to wait until she's born to find out what she chose :)

"This week on Kelly's Pregnancy"...

Ok, so I've been watching a lot of TV. What else can you do when your belly is ginormous?! My doctor's visits have been going well and I can't believe I'm only 6 weeks away from becoming a mommy!

Recent doctor's notes:

1) My baby's head and belly are in the 82nd percentile and overall she is in the 61st percentile! Diabetics tend to have bigger babies so this is normal... but it had to be the head huh? Oy vey.
2) My belly measures 35 cm from pelvic bone to just under my sternum. That's one biiiig belly! Also considered "normal" but I still get asked if I'm having twins, even at the doctor's office!
3) I started my NST monitoring this week which is where they hook me up to a machine for 20 minutes to monitor the baby's heart rate and movement to make sure her Central Nervous system is functioning properly. They want her to have at least 2 heart rate spikes in 20 minutes and she had about 6! Overachiever :)
4) She apparently hates sonograms... on the last one at 32 weeks, she was covering her face with her hands or the umbilical cord. It's impossible to get a clear look at her that doesn't make her look like an alien!
5) Her kick counts are awesome! She should have at least 10 kicks/movements in an hour during her most active time. She has 10 in the first 15 minutes from when I begin monitoring!
That's all for now, starting next week at 34 weeks, I will see the doctor twice a week to monitor my blood sugars, progress, NST monitoring, and more sonograms... won't be long now!! Tune in next week :)

That's one HUUUUUGE belly!

Welcome to the 3rd trimester!

I still have days that I can't believe I'm pregnant and here I am beginning my third trimester!
Here's what's been going on recently...

Childbirth class! Steve and I took a 6 hour course at the hospital to help prepare us for the big day. We learned about what to expect during labor and how to time contractions, the pros and cons to an epidural (YES please!), the baby's first year of life, and breastfeeding. We practiced the "hee hee hoooos" of Lamaze breathing and took a tour of the labor/delivery and postpartum floor of the hospital. We asked our instructor if she had ever had any Diabetic patients (she's a nurse at the hospital) and she said that my hospital is the best in the area for high risk patients. It was a shock to hear that I wouldn't be able to eat or drink once admitted to the hospital! In 18 years, I've never been able to miss a meal due to my disease! She said that I would have 2 IV drips, one with saline and glucose, one with insulin. They will test my sugars once an hour and adjust my levels accordingly. The BEST part of the day was when our instructor used Steve as her guinea pig and had him lay on the delivery bed with his legs up, demonstrating what pushing looks like!

Doctor's visits: I have continued to see my new doctor (that I love!) once a week. Around 32 weeks along, my visits will be twice a week to begin fetal monitoring where they hook me up to a machine to measure the baby's movement. The one noteworthy thing that the doctor has said is that they will not let me go past 39 weeks! The risk of a Diabetic having a large baby and mother or baby medical complications after 39 weeks increases. Therefore my due date has been moved up a week to January 25th! This also means that if I don't go into labor naturally, I will be induced with Pitocin which will make my contractions stronger and more painful... oh goody. As a planner, it was nice to hear that there is more of a definite date when I will give birth! Plus it helps my parents make their travel plans :)

Baby movement! This little lady is definitely a dancer with how much she moves around! Plus she's a night owl like her mommy & daddy because every night after dinner until I go to bed (and even after), she's a movin and a shakin. She moves during the day as well, just not as much. At my most recent sonogram I found out that it's actually her arms and not her legs that I'm feeling based on her body position! Her head is already down and she's in perfect birthing position... the tech said she shouldn't move much from this position this far in the pregnancy unless she's a tricky one which does happen. The movement has been really fun to feel and see and it still makes Steve giggle and say "That's so weird!" every time. She has started kicking/punching my ribs too which is definitely NOT fun but I'm thinking it's nothing compared to labor so I can deal with it!

BABY SHOWER!!

My baby shower was on October 24th at my mom's house... My mom, my older sister Debi, and my good friend Jen, all helped out to throw me a fabulous party! We had brunch style food, played games, and opened gifts. My little princess got some adorable clothes and some of the essentials that she needs. Good times!

24 Weeks... Wow time flies!!

Ladies and gentlemen, we have ourselves a little yogi/gymnast! This little girl will NOT stay still during a sonogram and LOVES the pike position with her legs up over her head and her hands either behind her head or covering her face. I met my new doctor in South Carolina along with the nutritionist, both of whom seem to be very knowledgeable. They discussed long term and short term plans with me based on my Diabetes and how they will keep track of my blood sugars and the baby's growth especially from here on out. At this point she weighs about a pound and a half which is in the 61st percentile for 24 weeks. We even got some great 3D pictures this time!

Baby's first home!

Welcome to South Carolina! We moved on Columbus Day weekend to a townhome in Charleston. The weather has been sunny and mid-80's everyday and we have been enjoying time spent together shopping for the items we need to fill our new home. Everyone we have met so far in our new town is very nice and helpful. We are even getting used to the Southern drawl already... (however, I don't think you'll catch either one of us using the term "Ya'all") We're ready for the arrival of our Southern belle!

We are VERY excited to find out we have a little princess awaiting us! The 3 "Old Wive's Tales gender prediction" quizzes that I took were accurate! She is currently 11 ounces, heart beat is 140, everything measured perfectly, and she has incredibly long legs. FBF is now FBGF! (Future baby GIRL Ferrara)

BIG SISTER ALEXIS!!

We spent Labor Day weekend with my beautiful stepdaughter Alexis and we were finally able to tell her she was going to be a big sister! Well, we didn't even have to tell her... she could see the bump with her own eyes! She was incredibly excited and asked lots of questions. She was most excited about not being an only child anymore! We asked if she would prefer a brother or sister and she said she didn't care either way... however, the entire weekend, Alexis called the baby "she" and would playfully fight with her dad who called the baby "he"! I think it's pretty clear she would rather have a little sister :)

The family of 3 will soon be 4!

Lexie was rubbing my belly and talking to the baby all weekend because I told her that the baby can hear voices now :)

19 Weeks already!

A great shot of big sister! I can't believe there will be 13 and a half years between them...

Diabetes and pregnancy...

...is extremely difficult to deal with! One day I will do everything right, and my blood sugars will be outstanding. The next day I will do everything right, and my blood sugars are high and all over the place. The doctors try to make adjustments as much as possible, but it's really hard when there is no pattern to detect. There is so much going on in my body already with the hormones etc that the Diabetes just adds to my body saying WTF? I continue to try my best, but it's very frustrating sometimes!
